Science Delivers Solutions to Life’s Most Vexing Problems

Ailment: Mosquitoes…  Cure: Chemical Invisibility Cloak.  Since the 1940's the leading defense against mosquitoes has been the chemical repellent DEET, but unless you remember to spritz yourself with it every few hours, you will eventually get chomped.  Entomologist Anandasankar Ray and colleagues at the University of California, Riverside, aim to do better with bug spray intended for bugs, not people.  They are developing a set of chemicals that disrupt the mosquito's sense of smell, effectively blinding the insects to humans.  Read entire article...

In the biggest breakthrough against malaria in years, scientists have identified odour molecules that baffle bloodthirsty mosquitoes

The molecules disrupt carbon-dioxide sensors that alert mosquitoes to exhaled breath, which signals the presence of a human nearby, the team reported yesterday.  Read entire article...

By employing smells derived from plants, butter, and beer, the university says it can prevent the insects from finding people by creating a scent blanket around an area.

Researchers at the University of California - Riverside say they may have found a better way to keep mosquitoes at bay.  Read entire article...

A whiff of one of three newly identified scents can send a mosquito into a bout of woozy bewilderment, scientists find. These odor molecules, they say, may stop the pests from biting and transmitting malaria and other diseases to humans.

The compounds could help replace the expensive and toxic repellent DEET and help fight malaria and other diseases spread by mosquitoes, which cause millions of deaths per year.  Read entire article...
